Google

Google updated its subscription plans for cloud storage with the introduction of the Google One program in 2018. What does it have to offer, how much does it cost, and are there any extra benefits? Here's everything you need to know about Google One.

What is Google One?

The basic idea is to bring all your cloud storage needs under one banner. The storage you buy — or even the free 15GB available to anyone with a Google account — is shared across Google Drive, Google Photos, and Gmail. Apart from the new moniker, Google also introduced a few new storage tiers to make it a more compelling option.

That said, you still access your files using those apps, so nothing changes as far as file interaction goes. The Google One app is for managing your subscription, contacting Google experts, and accessing a host of other benefits like hotel discounts, Google Play Store credit, discounts on Google hardware, and shopping offers (via Google Express), with many more to come. Anyone with paid Google Drive storage will also automatically be moved to an equivalent plan.

Where is it available?

Google One was only available in the U.S. initially. Since then, the service has rolled out in more than 140 countries. From Albania to Zimbabwe, you shouldn't have any problems signing up. You can find the full list supported countries here.

How much does it cost?

Everyone with a Google account gets 15GB of cloud storage for free. This also comes with unlimited storage if you're okay with compressing files in Google Photos to a 'high quality.' Storage limits count only if you choose to save your photos in the original size and quality. If you need more than what is available for free, Google's new subscription plans are pretty affordable.

  • 100GB: $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year
  • 200GB: $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year
  • 2TB: $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year
  • 10TB: $99.99 per month
  • 20TB: $199.99 per month
  • 30TB: $299.99 per month

The prices above are for the U.S. and differ depending on where you are. When looking at currency conversions though, there isn't a huge difference in price from country to country.

Can you share Google cloud storage?

Google One App Ios

The cloud storage you buy can be shared with five additional (six in total) family members by creating a family group or by sharing a plan with an existing group. Of course, only the storage plan is shared. No one else in the group will be able to access the files and photos you have saved. All members of the family group will also be able to take advantage of the extra perks that are available as well. The one caveat here is that all group members have to be in the same country.

Other features

Apart from extra cloud storage, you can also take advantage of a slew of additional features and benefits as well.

  • Google Experts: Have a question about Google's products and services? These are the people you turn to. As a part of your plan, you have direct access to Google Experts who answer your questions and help with general troubleshooting. Google Experts are available wherever Google One is, but the level of support depends on the language.
  • Additional benefits: Google also offers some extra benefits, that range from Google Play credits and special discounts on hardware and services, to hotel deals and shopping offers. These benefits vary from country to country though, but Google is continuously rolling out new perks in every region.

How to sign up for Google One

  • You will need a Google account to sign up. If you don't, you will have to create one first.
  • Once you are signed in to the account, go the subscription page to pick a plan.
  • Complete the payment and you're done!

Additionally, you can also sign up using the mobile app.

  • Download the app from the Google Play Store.
  • Select or sign in with your Google account.
  • If you aren't subscribed to a plan, tap on the 'Become a member' button on the welcome page.
  • Select a plan and pay for the subscription.

Google One is a subscription service developed by Google that offers expanded cloud storage and is intended for the consumer market. Every Google Account starts with 15 gigabytes of free storage that is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Google One paid plans offer cloud storage starting at 100 gigabytes, up to a maximum of 30 terabytes.[2] Google One replaced the paid services of Google Drive to emphasize the fact that the program is used by multiple Google Services.[3] The program's raw storage is not accessible by users, but emails, files, and pictures can be added and removed through Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos.

History[edit]

Google One was announced in May 2018. The 1 terabyte plan for Google Drive would be upgraded to 2 terabytes, while the 2 terabytes plan's price would be the same price as Google Drive's 1 terabyte plan (US$9.99). Google also announced that 24/7 support would be available with all Google One plans.[2] From May to August 2018, Google began upgrading Google Drive users to Google One, with Google Drive's 1 terabyte plan being upgraded to 2 terabytes. On August 15, 2018, Google announced that all users could get access to Google One in the United States for free, but would not receive any member benefits or upgraded storage.[1]

Storage[edit]

The storage managed by Google One is used by Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. The plans are slightly cheaper than the historical Google Drive plans. Google also removed their 1 terabyte plan and added a 200 gigabyte plan during the changeover, as well as reduced the price of the 2 terabyte plan from $19.99 per month to $9.99 per month.

As of August 2019, these are the storage plans offered by Google:[4][5]

StoragePrice (US$)
15 GBFree
100 GB$1.99/month ($19.99/year)
200 GB$2.99/month ($29.99/year)
2 TB$9.99/month ($99.99/year)
10 TB$49.99/month
20 TB$99.99/month
30 TB$149.99/month

Storage purchases renew automatically at the end of the subscription period. Users can upgrade their storage plan anytime, with the new storage tier taking effect immediately. Storage can also be shared with up to 5 additional family members, with each person getting the default 15 gigabytes. Files count towards the free default storage before counting towards shared storage. Many items do not take up any space: Google Docs, Forms, Sheets, Sites, and Slides. Shared files or files in 'Shared with me' only use up the owner's quota. Photos and videos using the 'High Quality' setting do not take up any space, but may be a lower quality than the original version. Google Pixel phones allow users to back up an unlimited number of videos and photos that don't count towards the quota.[6][7] Users of the Google One service also see an addition to their account's avatar icon of a four-color circular surround made up of the company's blue-red-yellow-green color, scheme to denote their status.

Google announced it would no longer be offering unlimited free storage to 'high quality' and express quality photos beginning 1 June 2021. This means that from that date onwards high quality photos and express quality photos will now count towards your 15 GB Google Account Storages.[8]

Google One VPN[edit]

Google One VPN is a virtual private network service offered by Google, as part of their Google One service.[9] The software works as a privacy and security tool that encrypts users' web traffic and masks their IP addresses, It is available for Google One Android users in the 2TB plan in select countries.[10][11][12]

Features[edit]

Users with a paid plan are able to get:

  • Support from 'Google experts', for all of Google services. The support is open 24/7 and is available over chat, email, and phone.[2]
  • Automatic phone backup on Android through the Google One app.
  • Users in the 2TB plan get access to an Android mobile VPN
  • Users in the 200 GB and 2 TB plan can get up 10% back on their purchases in the Google Store
  • Google also offers Google Play credits and benefits from other Google services for users who have one of the paid plans.
  • Google has also added family member support, allowing for up to 5 additional family members to share one shared plan while still retaining their free 15 gigabytes.[13]
